Upon the orders of king Louis XV, the Earl of Bourgainville undertakes a voyage around the world that leads him in 1769 to the Île de France today better known as the Island of Mauritius to observe the sun passing in front of Venus. This exceptional phenomenon, which occurs, on average, only once a century, would enable scientists to determine the exact distance that separates the earth from the sun. This particular mission is not the only one that has been assigned to Bourgainville.
