SAMENVATTING
June 1943. Julien Sarlat jumps from the train transporting him to Germany and reaches the small village Cambeyrac in the Aveyron, where he hides, without the villagers' knowledge, to await the end of the hostilities. Strange intervention of destiny: the train that he was on is bombarded and one of the corpses is identified as being his. In the eyes of society, he is now dead. Profiting from this unexpected situation, he takes refuge in the granary of the teacher who was arrested by the French Gestapo and whose house had the seals affixed. From that moment on, the living dead will, from his observatory overlooking the square of the village, be the spectator of this permanent theatre of ordinary people in their every day business. Love, hatred, envy, cowardliness, passion, heroism: nothing escapes the observer. Up to the moment where the spectator becomes an actor himself and once again meets up with his destiny - cruel and mocking, always unexpected - which gave him only a temporary reprieve
