February 1939. Éliane Goldschmidt, a young French linguist, lands in Paraguay to complete her studies of the Guarani language. With the Mbyas Indians, she discovers a people that are apathetic, resigned, as if they had decided to deliver themselves to death. But one morning, the village is all excited. Women lacerate themselves and the maracas burn. Is this strange behaviour directly linked to the announced coming of Karaï, the man-god? And does the world without pain, the mythical paradise of the Indian legends really exist?
